New Year, New Langham

Happy New Year! As many of us are happy to see 2020 come to a close, we are hopeful for what 2021 will bring. Here at The Langham, Boston, we are proud to say that thanks to diligent and hard work, the top to bottom renovation of our iconic space will be completed this year. To celebrate, we are kicking off 2021 with a video series to bring you into the hotel to show you how we have transformed so far and what you can expect when you stay with us once again.

Over these next few months, we’ll be going behind the scenes to show you some of our favorite areas of the renovation. In collaboration with Dyer Brown, the design team at Richmond International, and Shawmut Design and Construction, we have worked hard to bring The Langham, Boston back to life. While both preserving the history of the building and bringing this national landmark up to a new standard of modern luxury, we have incorporated the finest materials and design techniques. The redesigned guestrooms and suites, meeting and event spaces, stunning new Langham Club, and exciting bar and restaurant concepts will perfectly complement The Langham Hotels and Resorts global portfolio. We’re happy to say that this new American classic will finally be re-opening our doors to guests this spring. So, stay tuned for our monthly video updates as we get closer and closer to our reopening!

This month we are excited to share our new grand entrance!

As you may know, our building was once The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, dating our history all the way back to 1920 when construction for the bank first started. Architect, R. Clipston Sturgis chose a Renaissance Revival Style that took two years to complete and featured a masonry exterior with rusticated granite at ground level and limestone above. Can you believe it that the granite is actually two feet thick?

Because the building was designated a Boston landmark in the 1980s, throughout our renovation we have been working with the Boston Landmarks Commission to ensure the exterior continues to represent the essence of the original design. While maintaining the historic nature of the façade, we also wanted to elevate the property so were able to make things sleeker and more modern.

You’ll notice that we have traded in the red awnings for charcoal and added new accent up lighting, so that all the little details of the building can be enjoyed both day and night. Guests will be welcomed back under the new entrance canopy on Franklin Street that was custom made with bronze panels in the Czech Republic. The canopy also features 186 light bulbs and a massive amount of steel - 5,500 lbs to be exact!

Our new entrance represents the start of the next chapter for The Langham, Boston and we can’t wait for our guests walk right under our beautiful new canopy on their way to one of our exquisitely restored guestrooms or suites! Subscribe to our newsletter and follow us on InstagramFacebook and Twitter so you can stay up to date on our transformation each month!
